Running alongside our ‘Japan’ summer exhibition, this workshop will show you how to create a notebook using the traditional method of Japanese stab binding.

The book block itself will be made of Tosa Washi, a thin but very strong Japanese paper. This is held together primarily with ‘paper stitches’ then trimmed. The covers are of Katazome-shi, a decorative paper printed by hand from blocks designed for printing Kimono fabric. These are stitched on with linen thread.
