Etching Impossible Landscapes - Demo/Artist's Talk – February
Morning session
Tuesday 12th February 2018
10.30 – 11.30
£10 - Artist's Talk and demo
Join Artist and Printmaker Susan Wright for our February toolkit session. Susan has recently graduated from the MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. She will talk about her current printmaking practice which uses traditional printmaking techniques such as etching, collagraph and monoprinting. She will show examples from the different techniques that she uses and demonstrate inking and printing one of her map-like etching plates, using a variety of colours.
Susan is interested in the way that landscapes are constantly in a state of flux; transformed and recast by human intervention. She creates imagery generated from discarded and eroding books, found within the local West Yorkshire landscape. Drawings based on decimated pages of these books are used to create complex, layered etchings, which incorporate ideas evoked by topographical features. The prints become map-like, map like symbols are added to the image to create new imaginary and impossible landscapes. Inevitably, the local Yorkshire landscape influences the work but is seen through a changed viewpoint. Susan’s prints reveal the tension between the fragility of the landscape seeking to assert itself and the increasingly overwhelming impact of humanity. The natural forces present in the environment are reproduced in the printing process – pressure, erasure, erosion and regrowth.
