March Lockdown Livestream - a top line-up of folk & roots music
Our March Lockdown Livestream will feature four exceptional artists who between them range across folk, Americana, country, bluegrass, jazz and more - Sierra Hull, Hannah Read, Caitlin Canty and Isa Burke. I'm delighted to present this outstanding all-female line-up to celebrate International Women's Day earlier in the week! #IWD2021
Still only 29, Grammy Award nominated multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull has hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. Making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10 alongside Alison Krauss, the virtuoso mandolinist landed a deal with Rounder Records aged just 13. Sierra has performed and toured with many renowned artists and released her acclaimed fourth album 25 Trips in February 2020. Sierra performed two sold out gigs for True North Music back in 2016 and 2017, and we're so pleased to welcome her as part of this special concert. Hannah Read is a versatile Scottish fiddler, guitarist and songwriter. Her latest solo album drew comparisons with the likes of Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell, and is an atmospheric delight. Hannah was also part of the critically acclaimed British folk supergroup Songs of Separation, Album of the Year winners at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. She has worked with notable artists including Rosanne Cash, Kris Drever and Julie Fowlis among many more.
Hugely talented musician Isa Burke is primarily known for being one-third of the outstanding folk-rock band Lula Wiles. Equally gifted as a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist (on guitar, fiddle and banjo) Isa’s magnificent singing, jaw-dropping instrumental chops and razor-sharp lyrics form a potent combination. She grew up immersed in a thriving traditional music community in Maine, and has collaborated with acclaimed artists including Session Americana and Rose Cousins. Caitlin Canty is an exceptional American singer/songwriter whose music carves a line through folk, blues, and country ballads. Her evocative voice, gorgeous songs and spare, expressive guitar are captivating. Caitlin's song Get Up was nominated for Song of the Year in Folk Alliance’s International Music Awards and her latest solo album Motel Bouquet was produced by Grammy-winning Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers) and features some of the finest acoustic musicians in Nashville.
True North Music is a dynamic Huddersfield-based roots music promoter. In the absence of our "real life" music series, we're hosting occasional online concerts featuring some of the finest acoustic musicians we know. Saturday's event follows on from our February livestream concert and our virtual festival in October, and the three-part series has been partly supported by funding from Arts Council England's Project Grants. We still need your help to make the whole project a success though! The live stream will be freely available to enjoy, but please make a donation if you can afford to. This will help us to balance our budget and pay the musicians as much as possible. We've been running our popular True North Music concert series since 2015, showcasing some of the finest talent in bluegrass, Americana and folk/roots at over 50 gigs in Meltham, Marsden and Sheffield. The last year has been a devastating time for live music, so please donate if you can. You can also help us by sharing the event with friends to help us spread the word. See you there!
