Tracy Satchwill receives art funding for Magna Carta art project

Local artist Tracy Satchwill has received funding from the Arts Council for her Magna Carta project. She will be creating a collage, which will commemorate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta for 2015. She says ‘as an artist, social history and particularly women are close to my heart so I thought I would combine my passion with this important piece of history.’

Tracy will be creating a playful and theatrical four-piece collage of the key women and men that have had an impact on British women and their journey over the last 800 years and will include Catherine of Aragon, Emmeline Pankhurst and women of today. Tracy adds ‘ Since researching the Magna Carta and it’s planned festivities for 2015, I understood we were celebrating the simple ideas of freedom and justice over the last 800 years but controversially this is a different case for women who have experienced a gruelling journey of obstacles, prejudices and constant battles for the right to education, vote, equal pay and other basic human rights. My art is a great way to inform and inspire the next generation and a chance to find out more about these fascinating women and their difficult journey.’ Alongside the collages there will be 5ft cutouts of two famous women similar to the seaside figures.

The collage will be touring England, visiting Devon, Surrey, Hillingdon, Windsor and Maidenhead including Runneymede National Trust, Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Royal Holloway University, Sarum College, Brunel University and other exhibition spaces. As well as the collage being supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Tracy is pleased to have received funding from Royal Holloway University of London, where suffragette Emily Davison studied. To start the tour there will be a private launch in Brixham Sea Works in November.
