Collections Spotlight: Girl in a Pink Veil

On display at Torre Abbey is this intimate portrait 'Girl in a Pink Veil', oil on canvas, painted by Jules Bastien-Lepage.

Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) was a French artist, best-known for his small portraits, which were hailed for their psychological depth. His realist style influenced many other painters, including members of the Newlyn School in Cornwall, particularly Stanhope Forbes.

A leading painter of the Naturalist school, he received the cross of the Legion of Honour for Portrait of Mademoiselle Sarah Bernhardt (1879) and was commissioned to paint the Prince of Wales. In 1880 he exhibited 'Joan of Arc listening to the Voices', which now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

English critic Royer Fry credited the wider acceptance of the Impressionists, especially Claude Monet, to Bastien-Lepage.
