Torquay Museum See something amazing, discover something new!

Visit Torquay Museum for a truly inspiring day out! As well as our changing exhibitions programme, our permanent galleries show an amazing range of natural history artefacts, galleries on explorers, egypt and the amazon, and our social history collections.

Agatha Christie
Britain’s only permanent gallery dedicated to the life story of Torquay’s most famous daughter, the world’s undisputed Queen of Crime. Trace the eventful life of the best-selling author, through a vast collection of photographs and images. See some of her personal effects, from an original manuscript and handwritten notes to some of her clothes and dozens of first editions of her novels.

Explorers
A new interactive Explorers Gallery traces the incredible journeys made by Torquay's famous explorers, including the hero of Brad Pitt’s movie, The Lost City of Z - Percy Harrison Fawcett, who spent years exploring the jungles of South America. Explore life and death in Ancient Egypt, including the coffin of a little boy entombed within, and see many beautiful and rare objects collected from across the globe by Torquay explorers.

Ancestors
See the oldest human fossil in Britain, a 43,000-year-old jawbone, as you explore half a million years of human evolution in Devon. Humans first arrived here some 450,000 years ago. Trace their progress to the elusive Neanderthals that inhabited Kents Cavern during the Ice Age, sharing this landscape with woolly mammoths, cave bears and huge scimitar cats.

The English Riviera
From a tropical coral sea to an arid desert and ice-bound landscape, the English Riviera has changed radically over the last 400 million years. The Time Ark Gallery explores Devon's unique geology and tells the story of Kents Cavern's prehistoric caves - home to humans, scimitar cats, cave bears and hyenas for half a million years.

Fun and Adventure for Kids!
Become a reporter on the "Curse of the Mummy’s Hand" story breaking in Egypt, hunt down the clues around the Museum and claim your prize. Or follow the Explorer’s Trail, crack the secret code to the safe and discover what awaits you inside. There are also special events at the Museum during school holidays. Check our website for details.

Museum Opening Times
