The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments: Nine Daies Wonde
7.30pm
Tickets £14 | Under 18s £5
In 1600, Will Kemp, a shameless self-publicist and leading actor in Shakespeare’s company, danced from London to Norwich in nine days, entertaining an adoring public en route. Four musicians and dancer Steven Player, plus an array of unusual instruments, celebrate his journey, with raucous dance tunes and more refined music of the age.
Clare Salaman (Director, nyckelharpa, hurdy gurdy, hardanger fiddle, medieval vielle) is a former member of the Dufay Collective, has led projects for the Royal Academy of Music, and has presented Radio 3’s Early Music Show.
Jeremy Avis (tenor, percussion, cittern) has played for TEMS with Joglaresa. A former cathedral chorister, he now performs in many musical styles including early music, world music, and jazz.
Ian Harrison (pipe and tabor, voice, cornett, whistle, pipes, shawm, tambourine) organises and plays in two groups: mediaeval wind band Les Haulz et les Bas, and The Early Folk Band.
Alison McGilllivray (baroque cello, viola da gamba) was principal cellist and soloist with The Academy of Ancient Music and The English Concert. She is now focussed on small scale performance.
Steve Player is a dancer, musician, actor, and lecturer who specialises in early dance. He has worked with the RSC and with leading ensembles. He studied guitar and lute at the Royal College of Music.
