When it comes to iconic choral music you can’t get closer to musical heaven than with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor. It was composed, or more accurately, compiled by Bach in 1749 the year before his death. Why did a Lutheran compose a Missa Tota? Scholars are still debating this, but we are left with a monumental composition that Bach composed and compiled from music he had written before 1749. As far as we know it wasn’t performed in its entirety until 1859. His son CPE Bach called the work The Great Catholic Mass’. Come and hear this inspiring composition in the glorious surroundings of Dartington Hall, with the Dartington Community Choir, Devon Baroque and soloists.
