A huge event to end the week – a concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s richly poignant opera, Eugene Onegin, based on a verse novel by Pushkin. It provided Tchaikovsky with an opportunity to present authentic experiences and emotions on the stage, and quickly became a firm favourite with Russian audiences. Within a decade of its 1879 premiere it had been performed over one hundred times in St Petersburg.
Tchaikovsky’s deep sympathy for his heroine Tatyana is shown in the tenderness of her music. Her yearning string motif opens the opera, and it gains full expression in her letter aria in Act I – one of the most intense solo scenes ever written for the soprano voice. Come and hear a wonderful opera, performed by great young singers.
The conductor Sian Edwards has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland, Orchestre de Paris, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Berlin Symphony, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, MDR Leipzig, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, the Hallé, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. She made her operatic debut in 1986 conducting Weill’s Mahagonny for Scottish Opera and her ROH debut in 1988 with Tippett’s The Knot Garden. From 1993 to 1995 she was Music Director of ENO. Sian Edwards’ many recordings include Peter and the Wolf, Britten’s Young Person’s Guide, and Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, and Judith Weir’s opera Blond Eckbert with English National Opera. Sung in Russian, with surtitles.
Part of the Dartington International Summer School 2015 concert and events programme.
