“Sarah Gabriel, as fine an actress as she is a singer.” Le Monde
The brilliant soprano Sarah Gabriel sings music spanning four centuries, from early Handel works to brand-new commissions. For Dartington, she presents a brand new recital programme of music banned under the Third Reich – not just the early, post-Wagnerian music of Berg and Schoenberg, but the romantic poet Heine too, whose beautiful poetry was set by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Brahms.
Sarah performs on the opera stage around the world, in recital and in oratorios, and in music theatre. She made her triumphant European debut as Eliza Doolittle in Robert Carsen’s much-loved production of My Fair Lady at Théâtre du Châtelet, opposite Alex Jennings as Higgins.
Songs set to the poetry of Heine:
Robert Schumann Die Lotosblume
Clara Schumann Die Lorelei
Mendelssohn Auf Flügeln des Gesanges
Brahms Es schauen die blumen
Schubert Am Meer
Berg Seven Early Songs
Schoenberg Four Songs Op.2
Part of the Dartington International Summer School concert and event programme.
