“Sarah Gabriel, as fine an actress as she is a singer” Le Monde
The sparkling soprano Sarah Gabriel performs Poulenc's dramatic monologue La Voix Humaine, based on Jean Cocteau’s play. The libretto consists of a woman's last phone conversation with her lover, who now loves someone else, and is a hugely influential and popular work. Sarah Gabriel has won much acclaim for her performance of this intense, dramatic work – ‘Her performance was a tour de force,’ Seen and Heard International – and in the intimacy of the Barn Theatre, her performance will be all the more powerful!
‘Mr Brecht! Are you now or have you ever been...?’ is a funny, revealing meditation on Brecht’s public interview with the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1946 in Washington, and presents Brecht and Weill's greatest hits, including Mack the Knife, Alabama Song, Pirate Jenny, September Song, Surabaya Johnny, Bilbao Song and many more. Director Richard Williams sets a snappy pace of singing and dancing, with students from the Advanced Brecht and Weill Course, and young actors from Drama Centre London.
A witty, poignant and spicy evening of words and music, celebrating two of the most original and politically astute creators of the 20th century.
