DISS 2015: Complete Bach Cello Suites I
Richard Tunnicliffe: baroque cello
Monday 10 August, 10pm
£8 / Under 16s £5
“Tunnicliffe… is entitled to have his say on Bach's six cello suites. He presents them in numerical order and thus as a process of increasing complexity and experiment, offering clear-sighted, intelligently informed yet emotionally engaged performances. His virtuosity in the faster movements is easy, though not casual, his degree of interpretative intervention gauged beautifully so that grandeur does not become grandiosity and the momentous sarabandes are reflective, not self-indulgent.” The Sunday Times
Bach’s six solo cello suites are considered amongst the greatest music ever conceived. By turns lyrical, dance-like, intense and all-embracing, the outstanding Baroque cellist Richard Tunnicliffe offers a rare chance to hear a complete sequence of these masterpieces, in this first of two concerts in the magical, late-night atmosphere of the Great Hall.
Richard is principal cello of the Avison Ensemble and guest principal of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has been much in demand as a continuo cellist, playing for opera productions in Glyndebourne and Salzburg, and on many orchestral and chamber recordings. He has received praise for his many performances of the six solo suites of Bach, and has even presented the 5th Suite as a dance work, using elements of baroque and modern dance, with Elizabeth Lea. He is a member of the viol consort Fretwork (playing at Dartington on 2 August).
Part of the Dartington International Summer School concert and event programme.
