DISS 2015: Alfred Brendel Lecture- Schubert’s Last Three Sonatas
Tuesday 18 August, 5.15pm Great Hall
£8 / Under 16s £5
Go behind the notes and explore the mysteries of music with the first of three lectures by Alfred Brendel.
“It took an inordinately long time until players and audiences discovered these pieces. Why have they now become so particularly cherished? What had kept them away from us until a few decades ago? What are their distinguishing features? And are these works, conceived so close to Schubert’s death, really documents of a musical farewell?” Alfred Brendel
Alfred Brendel is one of the greatest pianists of our time, but also one of the greatest musical thinkers of our age. In these three lectures – on late Schubert, Liszt, and the lighthearted A Pianist’s Alphabet – Brendel takes us on a musical voyage of discovery that goes behind the notes and explores the mysteries of music. He will hold his listeners enthralled with an array of musical examples, as well as his dry humour. With a successful blend of music and explanation, the lectures are informative and entertaining not only for experts, but also for all lovers of music with an interest in deepening their understanding of the subject.
Lecture 2: Liszt: From Exuberance to Asceticism on 19 August at 5.15pm
Lecture 3: A Pianist’s Alphabet on 20 August at 5.15pm
