“Adrian Brendel is everything but a showman: his tone is clear and precise, leaning towards classical refinement, always exposing an acute understanding of the composer’s intentions…” Berliner Tagesspiegel
One of the most versatile and original cellists of his generation, Adrian Brendel has travelled the world as soloist, collaborator and teacher. His early immersion in the core classical repertoire inspired an enduring fascination that has led to encounters with many fine musicians at the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls. His discovery of contemporary music in his teenage years opened a new and vital avenue that he continues to explore with huge enthusiasm, alongside his passion for jazz and world music.
Adrian’s concert programme for Dartington explores the lyricism of Schubert alongside the luscious romanticism of Dohnányi and Wagner, before finishing with Piazzolla’s sizzling homage to the tango. He is joined by the Summer School’s Artistic Director, the pianist Joanna MacGregor.
Schubert Arpeggione Sonata D.821
Dohnányi Cello Sonata in B flat minor Op.8
Wagner Wesendonck Lieder (arr. cello and piano)
Piazzolla Le Grand Tango
Part of the Dartington International Summer School concert and event programme.
