Carole Cerasi is one of the foremost early keyboard players of her generation. In the last 25 years she has established herself at the very front rank of performers and recording artists in her field. Her many performances have received great critical acclaim and her recordings have garnered an impressive series of awards.

Her programme for Dartington Summer School & Festival explores some of the most exciting and pleasing keyboard music to come out of Baroque Venice. From Picchi’s almost barbaric dances, Storace’s imaginative and exciting ciacconas and passacaglias, to Galuppi’s lyrical sonatas, the elegant keyboard music of La Serenissima offers as much as the better-known string works. A number of Vivaldi’s wonderful violin concertos were transcribed by Bach as a way of absorbing the Italian style, and his version of the Concerto RV310 provides a suitably exuberant ending to this recital.

Galuppi told the historian Charles Burney that the definition of good music is ‘vaghezza, chiarezza, e buona modulazione’ (beauty, clearness, and good modulation). Each of the Italian composers presented here has a clear and individual voice that is far too seldom heard and deserves to be enjoyed, whether the modulazioni are buone or not!
