The Lay of the Land
Our first exhibition for 2020 presents a selection of paintings by Lorna Brown based on landscapes both nearby and a little further afield. Royston Heath, the iconic Primrose Hill, London, and a local allotment site all provide interesting possibilities as subjects. Starting with photographs and sketches, and through alteration and re-working the paint, an impression of a place emerges. The paintings are not about achieving likeness or abstraction, but through form, colour and mark, they achieve a resonance which captures the rhythm of the landscape.
Landscapes are founded in the soil and so of course are ceramics. Chosen to complement Lorna’s paintings are hand-thrown stoneware vessels by Trevor Dyer. He enjoys the 'alchemy' of the process he uses, making his own glazes to suit reduction firing conditions. His exciting combinations of copper red and cobalt-rutile glazes echo the colours in many of the paintings.
