Exhibition shows the best in the West - 'Get Fresh' 2013

A group of the freshest and most exciting designer-makers are showcasing work in a new exhibition at the Devon Guild gallery. ‘Get Fresh 2013’ aims to highlight the creative energy coming out of the South West – from graduates to self-taught craftspeople beginning their careers. It is a chance to see innovations in print, furniture, textiles, glass, ceramics, enamel and jewellery.

Experimentation features strongly as makers combine new technology with traditional methods and unusual ideas. Paul Stopler (pictured) makes beautiful kiln-formed vessels - resembling containers but filled with solid glass. Jo Taylor’s rhythmic ceramic sculptures are influenced by architectural decoration such as plaster ceilings. Alexander White considers himself both a designer and craftsman:
his ‘Monroe Chair’ splays out in folds from a central axis created by a Computer Numerical Control machine. For these new makers it is a fantastic opportunity to exhibit professionally in a public gallery, sell work and expand their practice.

All working craftspeople in the South West can apply to be a Member of the Devon Guild. Their new Student Membership scheme offers opportunities, mentoring and advice about careers in craft.
