The Devil's Passion
The Devil’s Passion, an extraordinary solo piece of theatre, comes to St Albans Cathedral during Lent 2017 to offer a radically fresh perspective on the timeless narrative of the Passion of Christ. On Thursday 6th April at 7.30pm award-winning playwright Justin Butcher will perform his one-man play in the stunning setting of the Cathedral Nave.
Described as “A serious and seriously fine piece of writing, a terrific performance” by the Church Times, The Devil’s Passion tells the Easter story from the perspective of a diabolical Secret Service Chief, striving to combat “extremism” in the Middle East in defence of our “freedoms”. Directed by Olivier award-winner Guy Masterson, the play is set in 33AD when Jesus enters Jerusalem to fulfil his destiny and Satan ascends from hell to stop him. Thus a dramatic battle begins for the soul of humanity.
This intriguing production is currently being adapted as a major drama for BBC Radio with the much loved star of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, David Suchet, in the title role and has been received to wide critical acclaim;
“Timely, beautifully written, ingenious, poignant – an impressively versatile performance, in which Butcher’s writing shines”
Huffington Post
“The nuance of Butcher’s writing and the intelligence and rigour of its theology … make The Devil’s Passion such a worthwhile and forceful piece of theatre.”
