The Cause by Dreadnought South West
South Devon College to host Dreadnought South West Production
How far would you go for what you believe in?
To mark the centenary year of the first votes for many women in 1918, South Devon College will be showcasing the dynamic production of The Cause; An Overture of Rebellion and Revolt, to our students in a matinee performance followed by an evening performance open to the public.
The Cause is a new play inspired by an imagined meeting between two great leaders of the women’s Suffrage campaign. They believed in the same thing, but their methods differed greatly. Produced by the charity Dreadnought South West, this original musical score is matched with a captivating film animation producing a thrilling visual effect.
Written by playwright Natalie McGrath, and directed by Josie Sutciffe, The Cause offers students the chance to learn of the struggle, and the effects of campaigning for a cause by using different methods.
Playwright Natalie McGrath said “This tour feels timely with the current energy and visibility of women’s rights and gender equality campaigning that is taking place, and the centenary of the first votes for some women. As we developed the work, we met many women who have been campaigning for a long time”.
An infamous divide between the violent direct action of the suffragettes and the peaceful constitutional means of the suffragists, The Cause will offer inspiration towards all those who see it .
