Where Are You From?
When people ask me, ‘Where are you from?’ I never know what to say, but still I enjoy exploring the many possibilities for conversations around this question: Is it where I was born, where my parents were born, where my accent comes from, where my passport comes from, or where I live? I can give a different answer for each of these!
My most current project deals with this theme. I am working within the traditionally ‘White British’ context of Devon, where the arrival of migrants from around the world is now challenging local concepts of cultural identity and belonging. From my migrant perspective, I am facilitating a collaborative project in Totnes, the community where I live, with participants from diverse backgrounds, devising a performance to challenge assumptions about ‘local’ and ‘foreign’ identities and invite multiple responses to the question “where are you from?”
What is your answer to this question?
