The Sounds of Time

The University’s Department of Music has devised a fascinating concert that contrasts music that was popular in the era of Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institute and Technical College with some of the soundscapes being created and explored by today’s students. There are performances by the University’s Brass Band and its Chamber Choir of works by the likes of the Victorian composer William Sterndale Bennett, the Slaithwaite-born Haydn Wood, plus Vaughan Williams, Parry and Elgar. There will also be cutting edge electronic music by composition students, contemporary works for saxophone and newly-written songs by students who were given an unusual assignment as part of their course – to sit in Huddersfield’s Market Square for an hour and write words that became the basis of new songs.

"Both songs came out of a task I set for students on my song-writing module – to sit in the Market Square of Huddersfield for an hour and write free-association words, inspired by what they saw. The students used these words as the basis for a song, which was their first summative assignment." said dir Toby Martin.
