RedBall UK
This summer, New York artist Kurt Perschke is bringing his celebrated art project, the fifteen foot inflatable RedBall to the UK. Co-produced by Torbay Council and The Dartington Hall Trust, it arrives on the streets of the English Riviera in Torbay in June. RedBall then tours to Plymouth and Exeter before ending its South West journey in Weymouth. It then travels to London’s South Bank.
RedBall has intrigued and astounded people all over the world, from Chicago to Barcelona, Taipei to Abu Dhabi. The ball has already been seen in unexpected locations worldwide – squeezed into alleyways and underpasses, inflated in town squares, and squashed into bus shelters and bridge arches.
Production Assistant (voluntary), RedBall UK
The production assistant will work directly with artist Kurt Perschke and RedBall crew to assist with installation of RedBall in locations across the South West.
The role is an opportunity to learn about the work of artists and production teams in presenting artworks in public spaces, and to work alongside a major international artist. It will include support of the crew, and providing general assistance with set-up and take down of the ball.
The assistant will gain insight into management of health & safety and permissioning for productions in public spaces, and is expected to undertake a half day training with the artist before the tour start.
The Production Assistant needs to be:
Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
Willing to work as part of a team.
Fit and able to lift and carry.
Efficient, well-organised and ideally good at practical problem-solving
& have an interest in interventionist artworks.
This role is expenses-only. Payment will be made to cover reasonable lunch expenses and travel within the South West to attend the sites for the tour dates. We are also seeking a volunteer for Weymouth and for London, who should be based in or near each town as only travel within London or within Weymouth and Portland can be covered.
Tour dates in South West
2-5 June, 8-10 June, 15-17 June. (10 days)
NB these are all Fridays and weekend dates including the Diamond Jubilee weekend.
Weymouth 21-24 June & London 27 June-1 July.
Training day: Friday 1 June (tbc)

Evaluation and Visitor Assistant (voluntary), RedBall UK
The Evaluation and Visitor Assistant will support evaluation of the RedBall project through gathering information from visitors to RedBall, working with the RedBall Assistant Producer.
The volunteer appointed will receive training on principles of Audience Development and practices of evaluating audience development, and will gain an understanding of the data being collected for the RedBall project and how it might be reported to funders, particularly Arts Council England. The assistant will also receive basic training from Audiences London/SouthWest on conducting evaluation interviews.
The assistant will also build on existing front-of-house / visitor assistant / customer services experience to engage with a wide range of people who visit the ball, answering questions and providing information about the project.
The assistant could also be involved in informing/helping people to upload their videos and photos of RedBall onto social media platforms and websites.
The Evaluation and Visitor Assistants need to be:
Approachable and enthusiastic
An excellent communicator, good at talking to a wide range of people
Methodical with good attention to detail
Well-organised and dependable
& have an interest in interventionist artworks.
