Call for young people to learn master crafts in the South West
Young people are asked to come forward who are interested in forging a career in the creative industries; from fashion and textiles to media, print and graphic design.
Creative companies throughout the South West are offering exciting new work and training opportunities for 16-24 year olds.
Nigel Sargent from Red Letter Gowns in Buckfastleigh, is an employer offering places for two lucky apprentices on a fashion and textiles apprenticeship.
He said: “I view these new creative apprenticeships as a chance to learn from the master craftsmen, as they are specialist creative roles. They are unique in the South West and different from traditional apprenticeship routes such as plumbing and carpentry for example.
“We know there are young people out there who are currently out of work or education and we ask them to get in touch with us. We have decided to offer a creative apprenticeship because we want to help an enthusiastic young person join our team; someone we can train in order to build a long lasting commitment on both sides.
“I really want to take on an apprentice to learn the skills to build their career, instead of them being stuck in a dead end job.
“The right candidate will be able to get involved in designing and making evening gowns, wedding dresses, vintage clothing and more.”
Hannah Revell, Creative Services Development Manager at Plymouth College of Art, which delivers the schemes said: “The apprentices we already have onboard are a fantastic credit to their families and their employers, and have a great future ahead of them - now we want to hear from more young people ready to take that first step.”
“We are asking for young people interested in textiles and design, media, printing and graphic design to come forward so we can put them in touch with a suitable company and advise them of up and coming opportunities.”
Other opportunities include creative media; ceramics, print and graphic design, and are available in locations across the South West from Cornwall to Exeter.
