Audition Structure:
The main characters will be auditioned on 25/26th Jan and the 3rd Feb and, after that, he will build an "ensemble " who will play everything else - so those people who will not be auditioning for specific roles but still want to be in the company with the opportunity of playing several smaller roles should come to the workshop auditions on Saturday March 1st in Staverton village hall. This is also the time when we hope to audition younger members of the cast.
Anyone not successful in getting a major role will automatically be considered for the ensemble.
Play synopsis:
This charming tale of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad comes alive this Summer as Playgoers head downstream to the riverbank.
Ratty and his new friend Mole are whiling away the hours on the river bank, little knowing that they, along with Badger, are about to embark on a glorious adventure! Along comes the incorrigible Mr Toad in pursuit of his latest obsession, the motor car, to turn their tranquil life upside down and land himself in a whole heap of trouble – “poop poop”!
An exciting tale unfolds as the friends try to outwit the weasels of the Wild Wood and fight to reclaim Toad Hall for its rightful owner.
Main Cast:
TOAD - Toad’s inherited wealth and consequent lack of responsibility have allowed the weaknesses in his character to flourish. His life is a series of infatuations and he is highly image-conscious. Frequently behaving like a spoilt child, he is not unintelligent and ultimately must have charm.
RAT - Naval type, who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. A good, courageous heart beats beneath the bluff exterior. Feared by the Wild Wooders so must be able to show why.
MOLE - Mole’s confidence grows through the play. Ideally, physically the smallest of the four main characters.(could be female!)
BADGER - The ‘elder statesman’, a kindly, old-fashioned schoolmaster type. Respected by the other animals. Instant rapport with Mole.
ALBERT - (a horse) Albert is described as Eyeore’s cousin, which perfectly describes his gloomy character. Albert will be played on two legs, not four, and may have to give a brief piggy-back to the actor playing Toad. (could be female!)
CHIEF WEASEL - Leader of the Wild Wooders, a spiv-ish thug holds command without the need for violence.(could be female!)
WEASEL NORMAN - The Chief Weasel’s henchman, not terribly bright. (could be female!)
GAOLER’S DAUGHTER - doubles with A Policewoman. A comely country girl, possibly is charmed by Toad to some extent but probably has her eye on the main chance. A smart cookie.
BARGEWOMAN - doubles with The Motorist Monica. A canny, hard-grafting woman. Unattractive and unsavoury.
Other characters will be selected at the workshop audition on March 1st in Staverton Village Hall :
They are : Otter; Portly; Sergeant Fred; Parkinson the car salesman;
Motorist Rupe; Train Driver; Clerk; Rabbits; Stoats; Ferrets; Weasels; Squirrels; Hedgehogs (many of these have speaking roles and could be doubled!) & Fieldmice who can sing!
