&Piano Music Festival 2022 - Instrumental Evening
Thea Musgrave - Canta, Canta!
Dmitri Shostakovich - Cello Sonata
Joseph Horovitz - Clarinet Sonatina
Beethoven - Clarinet Trio Op.11
Our last main event for &Piano 2022, on Saturday 14th May at 7:30pm, is our instrumental event. We're really excited to be welcoming two extremely talented musicians, performing two wonderful instruments - Simon Turner on the cello, and Rae Todd on the clarinet.
We're delighted to have Slaithwaite resident Simon Turner join us this evening - Simon is currently Principal Cello (second seat) for the renowned Hallé Orchestra, but also keeps busy performing with his own Chagall Ensemble and guesting with other groups, including the exciting Manchester Collective. His love of bread lured him to Slaithwaite, where, during a sabbatical from the Hallé, he was getting up at 3am to make various baked goods over at the Handmade Bakery. Eventually, music called again, and this evening he will perform Dmitri Shostakovich's beautiful Cello Sonata - a piece of reflection, dance, melancholy and frivolity all rolled into one.
Shostakovich was a Russian composer who was often at risk from authorities in Soviet Russia for his progressive and provocative music. In light of the recent atrocities happening as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we think it's fitting to remember that there is more to Russian than the actions of the people in power, and that tragically, Russia has an extremely rich and wonderful history and culture that is masked by its troubled modern-day standing in the 21st Century.
And Rae, who originally hails from the North East and who was recently featured in one of our Town Hall Sessions, will perform Joseph Horovitz' jazzy Clarinet Sonatina. Rae has spent a good number of years studying for a PhD in Music Performance at the University of Hull. He particularly enjoys performing in small music ensembles and has performed at festivals and concert series' around the country. He's now studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music.
Then, in an &Piano FIRST - all three musicians (including Artistic Director Chris Pulleyn!) will come together to perform Beethoven's lively Clarinet Trio Op.11, and a little-known piece for Clarinet Trio by the brilliant English composer Thea Musgrave.
This is sure to be an incredible evening of amazing music, performed by brilliant musicians - we really hope you'll join us to enjoy it all!
(Event starts at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7pm)
