PHIL DIXON- VISUAL ARTIST Kinetic Sculptor
I explore kinetic movement in art, often by using electric motors, activated by the viewer either consciously through switches or unconsciously through sensing devices. Some recent work has harnessed natural energy resources to power the sculptures, or relied upon the viewer to power it manually. I use a broad selection of materials including metals, such as aluminium and steel. I am currently exploring fibreglass as a medium and I have been experimenting with pneumatic systems. My work varies in size, from small mechanisms and maquettes, to entire room installations in which lighting and confined space help to create the mood in the piece. Some sculptures have been designed to draw the viewer into a particular emotion. Other pieces have looked closer at mankind’s relationship with our environment in attempt to clarify to myself, my own place in this environment.
I have exhibited regularly around the south west since graduating from university in 2002.
I was a committee member of C.Visual Art which held several well received exhibitions in Torbay.
I have exhibited as a member of the Aesthetic Conceptualist group. We had two very successful group shows at Torre Abbey in 2009 and The National Trust Greenway Estate in 2010.
I have been a committee member of Dartmouth contemporary Arts, organising exhibitions at the Sainsburys Gallery in Dartmouth, and an annual exhibition at Buckfast Abbey.
I am currently working with Cockington Court, Torquay to organise an annual sculpture trail.
