Whalema Comes Home!

Whalema Comes Home!

Sixth Form Drama and Year 10 Science students from Paignton Community & Sports College celebrated their tour of “A Whale Story” with a final performance for members and staff of ROC Creative at the Palace Theatre.
The creative performance of drama, dance, music and science has been enjoyed by Primary School pupils across Torbay over the last two months, and performers from the College were very excited to be bringing “Whalema” – the beautiful whale puppet, created by staff and members of ROC Creative – home to her creators at ROC.
One student said “It’s been an amazing experience to go on a professional Theatre in Education Tour. It’s made me aware of the demands of being a professional TIE performer, from organising the schedule, collaborating with Science, making sure the piece is educational as well as fun, to devising the material for performance.”
The piece was coordinated and directed by Advanced Skills Teacher Jess Hunter, Drama Teacher Wendy Caplan, and Science Teacher Kevin Mitchell, and without funding from Torbay LA and Business Enterprise would not have been possible.
A spokesperson said “Producing a touring piece of theatre is a valuable learning experience for everyone involved. It prepares students for their chosen vocational route and it has promoted an important link between all of our schools. We are really looking forward to joining forces with other schools and organisations in the local community for our next project in 2011.”
