One of the very best of the new generation of female singer-songwriters.
A great storyteller and passionate performer.
Her second album “How Does Your Land Lie?” is available now and she’s used South Devon history as her inspiration.
The entire eleven track album is a result of Nicky researching Newton Abbot’s past and bringing to life some surprising stories from over five centuries.
Did you know?
• For four centuries from the 1500s, ships sailed from Devon to Newfoundland to fish for cod.
Many of the men involved in this lucrative but dangerous trade were recruited in the local inns. They sailed in spring to work throughout the summer months, returning home in autumn.
(Track 1 – New Found Lands)
• Leading Victorian theatre architect Frank Matcham was born in Newton Abbot in 1854 and went on to design over two hundred theatres in Britain, including the London Palladium, the London Hippodrome, Blackpool’s Grand Theatre and Tower Ballroom, Buxton Opera House and the County Arcade in Leeds. (Track 2 - Because of You)
• John Lethbridge was born in Newton Abbot in 1675. As a young man he worked as a wool merchant but later fell on hard times. With a large family to support he needed a new income and his solution was to invent a diving machine. For the next thirty years, Lethbridge’s invention triumphed and he became one of the most successful salvage men of his time. (Track 3 - Diving)
The album was recorded at The Sawmills Studios in Cornwall and features performances from cellist Bethany Porter, percussion and bassist Katie Marie, pianist Paul Caddick and pedal steel player Alan Cook.
Recorded at the prestigious Sawmills Studios, in Cornwall, the entire package is a sheer delight, with delicious artwork from Devon artist David Stuttard, full lyrics and the history behind the stories.
