The Tempest

Prospera, Miranda, the spirit Ariel, the monster Caliban and a host of other spirits and ‘noises’ inhabit a remote island.

The magician Prospera was ousted from her position as Duke of Milan many years ago and has been plotting a magical revenge for years. As the play opens, a storm, conjured up by Prospera, has shipwrecked a group of nobles and their servants on the shores of the island. These are the individuals on whom Prospera wants to take her revenge and regain the dukedom lost when Prospera’s daughter Miranda was only a child. Will mercy prevail?

Widely thought to be Shakespeare’s final full-length work, the play places the ownership of the island under question and is about power, lies, and oppression. It also deals with the contrast between our animal nature and the sophistication of art and explores how and if our animal instincts are ‘civilised’ by our learning. The Tempest encompasses different elements of drama, including physical comedy, violence, political intrigue, music, magical masques, movement, poetry and romance.
