After Studying many different styles during his formative years, Jim Doran turned professional in 1988, that same year he was highly commended for an oil portrait. Feeling the need to move out of his studio, he started a series of watercolour works based on city life. During the next five years Jim developed a less structured form of drawing and through experimentation with colour, a more expressive colour range.

Jim’s new work incorporates richer colours and an abstract element. He is now more moved by what he feels rather than what he sees.

Since 1988 he hs had several exhibitions of his work, including with the Federation of Northern Arts (where he began his artistic work) and the with Gateshead artists (where he won a special merit award). Having now moved to this area, he has had exhibitions at the Plains, D’Art, Appledore Galleries and currently has work on show at Chelston Gallery in Torquay. In 2001 he started teacher training, specialising in Art History and practice.
