One of the largest festivals of music, speech and drama in the country, the Mrs Sunderland Festival is in its 133rd year. In 2020 over 4000 performers took part in workshops, concerts and classes and we hope to see similar numbers for the 2022 festival.
There are over 140 classes for piano, instrumental, vocal, choirs and speech and drama. Something for everyone from musical theatre to opera, from five year old performing humorous verse to the adult dialect class. Junior, youth and adult choirs; piano from grade one to Chopin and instrumental individual performers to ensembles, don’t miss the ukulele group class – it’s amazing!! All classes are open to the public – just come to the town hall.
In addition the festival organises workshops; the adult singing workshop this year is Faure's Requiem, the special needs schools workshop has representatives from Kirklees and Calderdale schools; the key stage two workshop will see 900 performers in the town hall with a special concert in the evening for family and friends and the last night of the festival concert is a wonderful extravaganza of the finalist adult choirs and some special performances from the festival.
The prestigious young musician of the year with a prize of £1000 is open to performers across the country.
