Big Line Drawing Open Call
Background
Doncaster wants to create the biggest painted line drawing ever in Yorkshire, as part of the international Big Draw festival to coincide with the UCI cycle race, passing through Doncaster on 27th September.
This is an open call and aims to experiment in creating new situations for conversations and arts interventions in public spaces.
The Call
An opportunity has arisen for an artist or collective to translate and scale, a line drawing into a very large line drawing using an automated machine used for drawing lines on sports fields with white paint and where possible collaborating on the final design or other renditions with young people.
We are looking for a simple design which will translate well and broadly speaking, addresses: the environment, cycling, place.
The Big Draw
The Big Draw is the world’s biggest Drawing Festival. This year’s theme is ‘Drawn to Life: creativity and wellbeing’. Drawing teaches us to look. Drawing encourages observation, mindfulness and connection with nature.

UCI World Championship
UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) organises the world championship which this year is in South Yorkshire, with women’s and men’s legs routing through and around Doncaster on the 27th September. Although prior to the Big Draw, this will be a major opportunity to raise awareness captured from the air and we hope, broadcast coverage.
DCEP
Doncaster Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP) works with artists, arts organisations and teachers to connect children and young people with arts and culture. We believe that all children & young people should be able to access and enjoy high-quality cultural opportunities both in and outside of schools. Young people in Doncaster should be inspired, engaged and connected, and have a creative voice.
Doncaster Creates
Doncaster Creates is a project to shine a light on the best art and creativity within and hosted by Doncaster from 2020 onwards. A first initiative is a suite of innovative artists commissions/community consultations designed for streets and public spaces, with the aim of connecting with people of all backgrounds, non-traditional art-spaces and aims to experiment in creating new situations for conversations and interventions.
The Commissioned Work
We are keen to see collaboration and experiment with open spaces and urban environments. The drawing machine will mark out the final work in locations close to Doncaster (TBC sites). NB free flowing lines and no sharp angles work best, as do white or light, non blue/green colors.
Alongside the 2 very large drawings, the commissioned artist or group will be required to run workshops in non-non formal learning environments and possibly with schools en-route, to engage with young people on novel approaches to drawing and on a large scale. This will take place in the period leading up to the to the races during term time and in partnership with DCEP.
The successful work will receive an inclusive fee of £1000, will be available for concept, workshops and production plus a production budget of £500. The work may be re-produced in other formats for the purposes of this project and related promotion by the partners.
Expressions of Interest must be received by 12 noon on 25th July 2019 at 5pm and will be reviewed by an advisory group on 29th July. Applicants may be required to attend an informal meeting and then a final selection will be made.
