ways to imPRESS: Press Gang Printmakers
Following last year’s well received post-lockdown exhibition, eight members of the lively printmaking group from Salcombe Art Club return to Harbour House with an exhibition of new work. There will be a wall reserved for “off the peg” prints on paper, and another devoted to work in black and white, as well as more colourful framed printmaking throughout the gallery. This year the artists have produced a series of mobius strips, designed to hang down into the gallery and to follow on from last year’s collaborative dodecahedron project.
Printmaking techniques used by the group share the universal principle of transferring an image to paper from a prepared plate to create an original work of art, be it a one-off monotype or a small edition of intaglio or relief prints. The artists will give demonstrations of printmaking techniques at a small, portable press in the gallery, and there will be information available about some of the processes that are used in the studio. Printmaking is a complex craft, with unpredictable results, which is all part of the appeal for artists with a taste for risk and invention. Through the autumn and winter months the artists work together every week in the Loft Studio overlooking the estuary, and alongside coastal and marine themes there will be prints depicting landscape, flora and fauna.
