Arthur Glendinning
"Going back to basics motivates some of my new paintings in this exhibition. Earlier in my artistic life I worked directly from nature, filling dozens of large sketchbooks with landscapes, using watercolour and oil pastel. Rediscovering this cache of vibrant work I was inspired again to work en plein air, painting directly onto canvas in acrylic. Trekking up onto Dartmoor, easel and canvas attached to my back pack, I sit in this wilderness of tors, sheep and wild horses and cattle in vigorous communication, wrestling with angels as that mysterious conversation develops between the eye, hands and heart and the rugged subject before me. The canvases, raw and never finished, are the record of this process."
