Soil Culture: Artist Residency call out
Hannahs at Seale-Hayne and the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World (CCANW) are delighted to invite applications for the fourth round of its Soil Culture artist residencies. In the lead up to and coinciding with the United Nations International Year of Soils 2015 the short residencies are aimed at encouraging an exploration of the importance of soil.
Taking place across the South West of the UK and beyond the residencies will not only provide dedicated time for experimentation, research and the development of new work but also unparalleled access to facilities, expertise and working contexts.
The residencies and the touring of the resulting works are a key part of CCANW’s Soil Culture Programme, which includes a forum that took place Falmouth University in the summer and a major touring exhibition of works by established artists, which will tour in 2015.
The first 8 residencies attracted 627 applications from across the world. The selected artists so far are, Marissa Benedict (USA) working at the Environment and Sustainability Institute, University of Exeter, Karen Guthrie (UK) at Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Jonny Briggs (UK) at White Moose in Barnstaple, Debra Solomon (USA/ NL) at Schumacher College, Dartington, Anton Burdakov (UK/UA/DE) at the Eden Project, Sarah Ciurysek (CA) at Daylesford Organic Farm and Something & Son (UK) at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. CCANW will also be helping to support residencies by Paul Chaney at Kestle Barton in Helston and Anne-Marie Culhane at the University of Exeter.
We are now accepting applications for a Soil Culture residency at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne, near Newton Abbot. The residency invites an artist to engage its users, many of whom have disabilities, with the site’s history as a former agricultural college.
