Paragone: Painting or Sculpture?

A selection of work including painting, sculpture, video art, print-making and photography for an exhibition focusing on where the boundaries lie between 2d and 3d work, primarily painting and sculpture.

The historical debate from the early modern era: Paragone, questions which genre effectively mimics nature and reality and even attempts to supersede it. Artists and sculptors alike challenged the idea, arguing their own medium as a direct imitation of the image of man and his world, presenting credible perfection in an artificially excessive nature.

This dispute is still incredibly relevant: ‘Today’s photographic, film and electronic media use modern technical methods to continue this contest to conquer reality, a contest that has taken on the dimensions of a global picture war, thus giving the historical contest its actuality.’ *

The exhibition will look at the plastic constraints challenged by art and how artists attempt to mimic or transcend human nature in their portrayal of the world.
