INTERWOVEN Exhibition: The Story of Shoddy and Mungo
The INTERWOVEN exhibition, from WOVEN in Kirklees, celebrates the rich heritage of Dewsbury and North Kirklees’ shoddy and mungo industry and its connections to present day environmental issues in the modern textile industry.
The INTERWOVEN exhibition, from WOVEN in Kirklees, includes historical information about the shoddy and mungo industry in North Kirklees and links to modern day sustainable practices in the local textile industry.
There are also contributions from disabled textile artists, who have made work in response to the term shoddy, playing on how they are sometimes seen as shoddy or treated shoddily by society.
You can listen to extracts of stories from people who worked in the shoddy and mungo industry, and watch a film of the INTERWOVEN Ensemble’s performance of Round and Around: The Story of Shoddy in Song, a new piece of music featuring tabla and harmonium, brass and folk singing which draws on the rich cultural diversity that the textile industry brought to the area, from the industrial revolution up to the late 20th century.
The exhibition is free to visit and open to the public at the times listed below.
