Danielle Rose / Events / Thu 23 May 2013
Ryan Francesconi & Mirabai Peart
Totnes’ freshly refurbished venue The Barrel House Ballroom is set to host the first gig of many put on by new South West based independent live music promotion company Assemble on Thursday 23 May. The debut event sets the bar pretty high for things to come with Joanna Newsom collaborators Ryan Francesconi and Mirabai Peart topping the bill.
Assemble is headed up by promoter Danielle Rose, previously Live Art Producer at Dartington Hall, and currently one of only 12 producers across the UK selected by the PRS Foundation for their New Music Plus UK programme. Launching this year, with initial events to take place in Totnes and Exeter, Assemble which proudly roots itself in the South West, has a commitment to bringing alternative and new music down to the region south of Bristol.
The first event will feature a set of spellbinding duets for guitar and violin from Francesconi and Peart’s album recently released on Bella Union Road to Palios; their musical influences spanning Baroque, Americana and jazz improvisation but centring on the pair's main obsession, Balkan folk music, mainly from Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. On stage these ornate and detailed compositions possess a rare transportative power, an atlas of vividly evoked musical places performed with heart and soul by two extraordinary musicians.
