The European Commission has proposed a Europe-wide cultural-funding programme called Creative Europe, which aims to give an estimated €1.8 billion from 2014 to 2020, representing a 35% increase on EU expenditure on culture. Whilst approximately half of the proposed funding will be allocated to the development of the film industry, some €500m will be directly targeted at promoting visual and performing arts, funding an estimated 300,000 artists.
