Basingwerk Abbey Festival of Light

Basingwerk Abbey Festival of Light

May – October 2016
Fee: £3,000
Flintshire County Council is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and creative project Coordinator to work with council officers, Cadw and artists to bring all the aspects of the festival together. The Festival of Light, to be held on Saturday 15th October between 2.00-7.30pm at the magical ruins of Basingwerk Abbey within the stunning grounds of Greenfield Valley, is a family afternoon and evening of creativity, music and activities. The aim of the festival is to work with schools and communities along Flintshire’s coast in the lead up to the event to create large sculptural lanterns and projections which will bring the Abbey to life in an explosion of colour and light. Communities will also be working with dance practitioners and a composer to create music and movement to be performed at the festival. We will also have a stage for local live bands and artists to be showcased in the afternoon. Before sunset a procession of the lanterns will come through the town of Greenfield and make its way to the Abbey culminating in a celebration of the work produced by the community. The theme of the festival will be ‘From the Dee to the Sea’ and will concentrate on the stories, myths and legends of Flintshire’s coastal communities as well as their rich heritage and culture.

The project is funded by the National Lottery’s Coastal Communities Fund, Cadw and Flintshire County Council. The Coastal Communities Fund is funded by the Government with income from the Crown Estate’s marine assets. It is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of UK Government and the Devolved Administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
