Calderdale Council artist commission

Calderdale Council want to commission one or more artists to collaborate with the Landscape Design Tea m to develop typogaphy/graphic design/surface pattern and/or text based art. Artists should have a good eye for colour. The artists fees are up to £15,000 with an implementation budget of up to £50,000. For the brief email geoff@working-parts.com .

Calderdale is very keen to ensure that there is social value to the area in contracts that are awarded. The Council’s Social Value Charter will available to apppointed artists.

This stage of the Brighouse scheme is called the Accelerator Project and has a total build value of approximately £600,000, but also a very tight spending and completion deadline of the beginning of April 2021. Time is therefore of the essence. The success of this project will have an impact on the outcome of the application for the next stage of funding.

The Project Team have developed a strategy for integrating some of the industrial innovations from Brighouse as well as some of the social and cultural histories of Brighouse into text narratives and surface pattern that will populate surfaces of the landscape elements, floors, benches, planters etc.

This concept has a draft title, ‘Brighouse Yarns’, related to both the textile history of the town and the storytelling ideas.

Processes can include integrated text/surface pattern and graphic works and can be achieved by a number of means including, stencil, routing, searing, screenprinting, laser cutting.

Local knowledge or an understanding of the culture of the area will be a distinct advantage.
