Ruy Blas is a tragic drama by Victor Hugo. It was the first play presented at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, in 1838. Mendelssohn wrote this fine overture to Ruy Blas on commission in 1839. However, he reportedly detested the play!
Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is filled with beautiful melodies that appeal to both the head and the heart, making it one of those pieces that can serve as a wonderful introduction to classical music. It demands astonishing virtuosity from the soloist.
John Myerscough is Professor of cello and chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music, and gives string quartet masterclasses. He is Cellist with the Doric String Quartet, a Gold medallist at the Royal Overseas League Music Competition, and a Faculty member at the Yellow Barn festival in Vermont, USA.
His Symphony in D minor is Franck’s best-known orchestral work, and his only mature symphony. It employs a cyclic form, with themes recurring in all three movements.
