Insiders v Outsiders Art Lecture Series
Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man
Sunday 13 January 2pm
Simon Poë discusses an image from the Bible story of Jacob and Esau and looks at the dominance of the ‘smooth men’. This first talk examines the myth of Marsyas and Apollo, the Wild Man of the Woods, and much, much more.
Insiders and Outsiders Sunday 27 January 2pm
This talk is on the Royal Academy of Arts in London: its foundation in 1768; who was in and who was out; and the rivalry between William Hogarth and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Lord Leighton and the Academy of the Undead Sunday 10 February 2pm
Leighton was the second great leader of the Royal Academy but his figures are often criticised for looking like animated statues or even corpses. He died in 1896 and Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published the following year. Hear how within the Academy, Leighton’s brand of academic painting staggered on, zombie-like well into the 20th century.
