Elgar's Dream of Gerontius
Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius is rarely performed locally and Aeolian Singers are excited at the opportunity to perform this dramatic and beautiful oratorio in a concert in Hemel Hempstead on 12th November.
Elgar's setting of Cardinal Newman's epic poem tells of the death of Gerontius in part 1 whilst Part 2 narrates the subsequent journey of his soul to judgement and purgatory. The subject matter gives Elgar ample scope for dramatic expression, describing the wide range of emotions felt by Gerontius, the mocking voices of demons and the comforting, reassuring songs of angels.
The concert is conducted by Aeolian Singers' Musical Director, Stephen Jones. Stephen Jones is also the founder and Musical Director of the London-based City Chamber Choir who will be joining Aeolian Singers for this performance to create a chorus of more than 80 voices.
The choirs will be accompanied by Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra with soloists Sophie Mansell, mezzo soprano, Peter Davoren, tenor, and Jon Saunders, bass.
With the concert taking place 12th November, the choir is supporting the national 'Movember' campaign to raise awareness of men's health. On the photo members of the choir can be seen sporting the Elgar look in tribute to the great English composer.
Aeolian Singers are grateful for the support of the Williams' Church Music Trust and Dacorum Borough Council, allowing this concert to be staged
