The Flowering of Friendship - Remembering Srebrenica
The Flowering of Friendship
Monday 12th July: 10.30am Bradford Centenary Square, 2pm The Piazza, Huddersfield
Local authorities, community groups and schools joined together to Remember Srebrenica
Leaders, faith representatives, community groups and schools from Kirklees, Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds came together in a spirit of friendship to mark this anniversary and to make a pledge to renew their efforts to tackle hatred and prejudice wherever and whenever they encounter them.
Co-ordinated by 6 million+ Charitable Trust, 22 community groups and schools across the region decorated and filled window boxes using green and white flowers in keeping with the colours of the Remembering Srebrenica flower. They came together at the two participatory events and representatives of groups shared poems and messages of remembrance and hope. Each window box had a decorated word on the front panel and when all the boxes were placed in a semi circle, they spelt out a message of remembrance and hope.
The Lord Mayors of Bradford, Leeds and the Mayor of Kirklees, together with local authority leaders and faith representatives also took part in the remembrance events. Hava, the 12 foot high Bosnian weeping sister made and operated by 6 million+ walked from planter to planter. A small group of school children from Kirklees and Bradford sang “I am not Alone” in Bosnian and English. There were poems from the Batley Poets and from Jasmina Foric, based on a conversation she had with Zumra in Bosnia, a mother of sons murdered in Srebrenica.
Andy Wicks from Mediapreview edited footage from the two events to create this reflective film.
