Sara Gilbert Sara Gilbert, painter and print-maker
I completed an honours degree in Fine Art as a mature student at Plymouth College of Art & Design (PCAD) in 2007.
My work is often described as “energetic and dynamic”. Inspiration comes from my love of the natural landscape and the history of the South Devon coastline. I am influenced by the geomorphology of the land and my approach is often intuitive and spontaneous. I try to capture the ‘essence’ of a place in time through observation, quick sketches and photography. My paintings embody a ‘freeze-frame’ of natural phenomena and are an emotional response to my surroundings.
To enable me to capture fluidity and movement in my work I usually paint with water-based acrylics or thinned oils. The stretched canvas is often placed on the floor so that I can approach it from all four sides.
The process of painting is important to me. The qualities of the paint itself are explored as are the accidental marks and splashes that become part of the painting. There is a gestural approach in my work that lends itself well to mark making on a large scale. Large gestures with big brushes or small flicking gestures or simply letting the paint drip combine to capture the energy or flow of a place.
I am now looking to expand my experience and use my existing skills in this field with a particular interest in abstract painting. Recently I have been focusing on building up my professional practice as a freelance artist where I work from my studio in the small hamlet of Washbourne near Harbertonford.

Sara's work is full of energy and joy. It is confident and bold and bursts to be beyond the size of the canvas.
I love the movement in your work, especially in the sea-scapes - they have a life of their own - wonderful!
