Birdwood House / Event / Emma Hambly ~ Drawings and Photographs

15th Aug 2010 - 21st Aug 2010 (7 days)
I am intrigued by the process of photosynthesis, the process by which plants (and other organisms) use light energy and carbon (as well as various other components) to make living tissue; through this means they straddle the almost imperceptible line between inorganic and organic, non-living and living. The drawings and other works that I am exhibiting at Birdwood Gallery this summer are linked by this theme, with references to it both on land and in the sea. Although drawing is a major part of my practice, the media that I use are in response to the subject matter I am contemplating, and in this instance include drawings, photographs and collages.
Land based biofuel production has recently attracted negative press due to its high land area, fertiliser and water usages. Current scientific research is investigating the potential of utilising the marine environment to farm biofuels. A number of the works that I am exhibiting have been made as a result of a collaboration with scientists working on a project, Biomara (www.biomara.org), in which the suitability of a range of both large and microscopic algae as biofuels is being investigated.
