The Corrie Dick Quintet

The Corrie Dick Quintet

Corrie Dick – “Impossible Things” Tour Comprising THE young players on the London scene today, “Impossible Things” is a veritable supergroup lead by multifaceted Glaswegian Corrie Dick. Leading the band while glowing at the drums, Corrie’s compositions are varied in mood but consistent in both quality and depth of influences. Some pieces drip with mercurial poise while others provide breathtaking landscapes from which emotional anthems later surge.

Featuring Corrie’s euphoric drumming style alongside the mighty lineup of Alice Zawadzki (voice/fiddle), Joe Wright/George Crowley (saxophone), Matt Robinson (piano) and Conor Chaplin/Tom Herbert (bass), this majestic ensemble is sure to satisfy harsh jazz critics and song lovers alike.
An innovative presence on the UK music scene, Glaswegian Corrie Dick is a musician recognised for his fluency, gritty sound and euphoric abandon on the drum kit. He has caused a stir in the UK and European jazz scene with his prolific and diverse activity, touring with Dutch sax tyro Maarten Hogenhuis, the trio of Azeri pianist Isfar Sarabski and trumpet sensation Laura Jurd’s ensembles Dinosaur and Human Spirit as well as Fellow Creatures – the exciting new project from international powerhouse bassist Jasper Høiby. His own critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Impossible Things’ released November 2015 also displays his striking abilities as composer/lyricist by skilfully fusing Celtic folk and contemporary jazz with North African rhythms.

Since his graduation as a gold medal student from the jazz course at Trinity Laban, Corrie has honed his playing and composing within the ranks of the renowned Chaos Collective – an organisation and record label founded by Corrie alongside his closest collaborators; BBC New Generation artist Laura Jurd and European Jazz Artist of the Year Elliot Galvin. The “young master of contemporary grooves” has studied traditional music in Ghana and Morocco where the rhythm is rich and layered, and also in his home land of Scotland where rhythm and melody have melded for centuries, and is celebrated as BBC’s “Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2013”.

A winner of no shortage of accolades – Corrie picked up BBC’s 2013 Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, Scottish Jazz Awards “Up and Coming Artist” in 2012, countless others during his time at college and has been nominated in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards several times including this year – Corrie owes his talents to the myriad supportive communities he has himself been crucial to. He is an alumni of both Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and has been mentored by the likes of Mark Guiliana, Kendrick Scott and Ari Hoenig as well as Ghanaian kpanlogo master Saddiq Addy, nephew of the legendary Mustapha Tettey Addy. He has also studied the traditional music of Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Benin and other parts of Africa alongside his prodigious creative companion, guitarist Rob Luft.

Corrie is an original, open-minded questing talent who is destined to extend the parameters of what it means to be a drummer.
