Benefits of doing theatre with us include gaining increased self confidence, learning basic acting/ performance skills, and public speaking, making new friends, learning about local history and legends, and working as part of a close team. Our main membership rules are that members attend rehearsals/ workshops reliably, and carry out whatever tasks that they have agreed to do (help is always available!), and treat other members of the group, and the public, with respect and friendliness.

OUR HISTORY:

The South Devon Players theatre company was founded in Brixham, a historic fishing port in South Devon, England, in 2005 by local actresses, seeking to increase the number of performance arts events in the area, and to create new projects, to be performed to new and existing audiences. Tending, as we do, to favour venues such as pubs, church halls, hotels, we bring interest and participation in the arts and local culture to a wider audience that those who are traditionally theatre goers..

By 2006 we were well on our way, producing a comic historical play written from local historic records, about the 17th Century author and vicar, John Prince, performed in several local towns.

On the back of this came a great deal of interest, with the local BBC contacting us for casting a local docu-drama, several members also being involved in other local pilot films, as well as local shows for Remembrance Day, the turning on of the Christmas Lights in Upper Brixham, and a pantomime - Robin Hood.

In 2007, our main project was s "The Ballad Of Resurrection Bob", a musical written by members of The Players, about a local smuggler and all round rogue. This is being performed around Torbay and south Devon all through the summer of 2007. closely followed by The Court Of King Arthur , an interactive theatrical experience performed in the spring of 2008.

Since then, we have been involved in further period productions by local writers, low budget film making, and have begund to consider taking our work to events such as local drama festivals.

We rehearse weekly (dates vary with what production we are working on) in Brixham, nd welcome new members. Presently there are around 15 members, we welcome new members who are hard working, committed, enthusiastic, and able to work as part of a diverse functioning team (theatrical experience is not a pre-requisite, as we activly encourage and train people who are starting out in the creative arts).

Although we do not stick rigidly to any especial genre, we tend to perform work that is more related to historical or period settings, and which is usually newly written, or at least resurrecting something related to the arts or local heritage, which is not widely known. Work is entirely by local scriptwriters, and if you have always wanted to have a go at writing a theatre script, its well worth your joining us!

The South Devon Players can be contacted by email at all times, at

bardic_dreams@yahoo.co.uk

We welcome enquiries from prospective new members (please see the Join Us page!), and from new venues seeking entertainment or shows - we are happy to do projects in aid of charity, as well as for ourselves. Many of our members are also available for other shows castings.
