Phil Dixon - Life Expectancy

Phil Dixon - Life Expectancy

An exhibition of contemporary sculpture, in the Kitchen Gallery and Walled Art Garden at Cockington Court. Phil Dixon's work explores kinetic movement in art, often by using electric motors, activated by the viewer either consciously through switches, or unconsciously through sensing devices. Some recent work has harnessed natural energy resources to power the sculptures, or relied upon the viewer to power it manually. The materials used to create these sculptures encompass a broad spectrum and include metals such as aluminium and steel.

Some sculptures have been designed to draw the viewer into a particular emotion. Other pieces have looked closer at mankind’s relationship with our environment in attempt to clarify to Dixon, his own place in this environment.

The fun aspect of operating the sculptures contrasts the meaning behind each object used in the work, which is to convey Dixon’s own concern with growing older, the inevitable end to his life, and the struggle to accept the world continuing on its path without being able to be part of it. Dixon’s practice could be viewed as a quest for answers; however it is inevitably also providing him with a purpose.

Whether people find joy or fear in Dixon’s work he will believe it is a success. This is because his aim is to entertain and provoke a reaction, and to ensure no one passes by without engaging with the piece.

Phil Dixon has exhibited regularly around the south west since graduating from university in 2002. He is also a committee member of Dartmouth contemporary Arts who organise exhibitions at the Sainsburys Gallery in Dartmouth, and several exhibitions at Buckfast Abbey.
